Default Indian Passport Renewal

Hi,
I hope this is in the right thread....
Recently my parents sent in their passports to get renewed in New York. I was not in town so they took on this task themselves. They mailed the passports via USPS on March 7th, 2008. Its April 7th today and its been 1 month exactly without any word from the Indian Consulate. We tried calling numerous times and no one ever picks up. I sent an email a week ago and no one replied.

My parents are due to go back to India next month and time is really running short

What are my options? I really, really want to help my parents get their new passports.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thank you.

If they had sent their passports by express mail or priority mail with tracking, find out when they were delivered to the consulate in Newyork. With that you know that the passports did reach the consulate.

Then make a trip to the consulate in Newyork and deal with the consular officers. That should be the quickest way to resolve it.

I am in the same boat after sending my spouse's passport to CGI Houston.
You can probably make a visit to the consulate with all needed documents to get it fast.

Even if tracking is available, Consulates don't take responsibility of lost mails. So first thing would be to make sure that it is in consulate. Then look for cause of delay (any missing information).

If passport is not traceable, then you have to go through processing of passport lost (Police, Indian Consulate, USCIS for Visa/I94 or any relevent document). Then depending on travel requirement it would be normal or emergency passport.

so, there are several "ifs... and actions..."; first thing is tracing the Passport.

Default It is slow indeed.

1. Check with the postal service and make sure that it was delivered at the consulate (if it is overnight, UPS or FedEx etc). If it is regular mail or priority, then its going to be difficult.

2. If it is delivered, then check with the consulate (the only way you can get some response is if you go in person)

Do not be surprised of what treatment you are receiving in this process, that is very very normal and common.

Your first important thing is to get the passports or replacements back before cut loose.

If it has been sent by Express Mail, you can get scanned signature of the recipient via email (a pdf copy). Like I did last month. It has name of who signed it. That’s first pass.
I believe you have photocopies of passport. You can take that to NY Consulate and request for Emergency/Tatkal* Service. Some one here at forum had posted that he paid 100$ to some one and got it in one day. Try to find someone if that’s last mean.

Best of luck.

Sorry to say this but Indian Embassy and Consulates do work at snails pace.
They are unprofessional and rude when dealing with customers. The attitude of the staff is that they are here on vacation rather than for work. Not to bash them but they require a serious crash course on efficient working and PR skills.

At Washington DC Embassy you have emergency service pay 100 bucks and u get the passport same day. I think there must be one similar at NY Consulate.

Hello,

I recently had a six month long bad experience with my passport renewal in New York. Can you check USPS tracking info to find whether the passports were delivered to the consulate? If so, you need to call the consulate repeatedly.

Based on my experience, you should not give up calling until you get the passports. Here are the numbers I tried in the past and I added comments next to the numbers.

Phone #s

212-774-0641(Ppl answer this phone occassionally)
212-774-0608(Useless number)
212-774-0617(This is the number I called that got me my passport)

Call them and get this issue resolved ASAP. Keep us posted.

Thanks everyone for the help. Unfortunately, my parents sent the passports via USPS without any tracking. Looks like I will have to go there myself to figure out what the issue is in person

Sorry to hear about your parents plight . Are your parents GC holders or on visitors visa. If they are on visitors visa it would have been better to go back to india and then renew the passport there as a safety net.
