Default On WAMU at 1pm Thursday (today)

I'll be on the Kojo Nnamdi show on WAMU at 1pm.

The topic is high skilled immigration in the recession.
You can listen in live via a web stream at WAMU.org
There will be an audio archive available at wamu.org about 1 hour after the show.

WAMU is a Washington DC NPR station.

There will be three guests...
Ron Hira (spelling?) who is an well known anti (via phone)
Demetrios Papademetriou (migrationpolicy.org) seems to be a very analytical chap (in studio)
Mark Bartosik (me) ImmigrationVoice.org (via phone)

I'm going to try to swing the debate around to how we can fix the system, which of course requires acknowledging that it is broken, and that may mean agreeing with Ron on some points, but then proposing how we fix it (get GC wait down, country quota, loosen employer ties, grace periods between jobs, prioritizing H1B - rather than lottery).

Forgive me if I cannot cover it all. I've done this before and it is hugely difficult to get a message out in a short period of time, while debating professionals in the subject, especially when they may want to talk about different aspects.

Thank you Mark for speaking for the issues of all of us. Your enthusiasm and energy is very inspiring to everyone and I eagerly look forward to the Radio show this afternoon.

I remember your interview and discussion last year was fantastic and it hit a home run with the listeners.

Thank you!!!!

I am regular listner of WAMU and fan of Kojo's show.
Glad to know he is touching this topic and you are representing us on this.
Please stress on removal of country limits issue.
Good Luck!

Thanks Mark,

i know colleagues from UK who got their GCs after 7 years in EB3. So it is not only Indians and Chinese who are suffering.

Please note that sometimes the category (which can make a major difference in processing times) are decided to an unfair advantage to the employer who's sponsoring. Although a candidate can be well qualified for an EB2, an EB3 is filed to ensure s/he can be 'bonded' for a while.

There are folks who are in this country, LEGAL every second for 10 years, and still looking at an INDEFINITE period to get a permanent residence. Others are on their way to citizenship by virtue of the time & category of application.

The playing field is not level in the land of opportunities. Soon, this sentence can be in the past tense for folks who have had enough. That will be a lose-lose situation.

Best Wishes for the discussion.

Default Questions for Ron

2 questions for Ron Hira

1. When at IEEE, did he check the visa status (F1/H1) of both intellectual and financial contributors and just accept contributions only from greencard holders and citizens? Or even better did he tell the visa holders to wait till they get their greencards to make contributions?

2. Why does his employer Rochester Institute of Technology sponsor H1b visas? Did he check to see if they paid the 'wage'?

Thanks
