Default Passport expiry near, need to reenter back in US

I am posting this question on behalf of my friend who is in INDIA.

"I have a Green Card and currently I am in India on vacation. I am returning on 10th January 2013. My current passport will expire on 28th January, 2013. WOuld I be able to get in USA even if my passport has only 18 more days before it expires?"

Please respond, any pointers are welcome.

Since he has a GC, it should not be a problem. Technically, he does not need a passport to enter the U.S if he has a GC. Please see CBP site below:

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...nent-residents

This rule is as per 8 CFR 211.1(a). If I were him, I will email/call CBP and verify that is the case.
